The steel comes with a small oil film and is therefore not rusted on delivery.
Upon delivery, the grill plate and grate will be oiled with a thin layer of protective cooking oil. When first heated, scrape off the top layer with a stainless steel spatula. When the grate is clean and warm, it is ready for the first coat of oil. We recommend using a cooking oil such as rapeseed oil - an oil with a high fire temperature. Apply in thin layers with a cloth or paper. Slowly but surely you will see the protective non-slip dark oil layer forming. Remember to oil the sides of the grill plate and grate as well.
Carbon steel as a grill plate
Our grill plate and grate are made from carbon steel that is then continuously oiled to prevent corrosion. Carbon steel and cast iron are very similar and both are great for cooking. The main difference is that carbon steel contains slightly less carbon than cast iron. Cast iron, due to its very high carbon content, tends to clump together in the material with the risk of breaking and cracking the surface. It risks becoming porous and cracking over time.
Carbon steel is much more uniform and stable in its material structure and heat exposure will not damage the surface. This gives our grill plate and grate an extremely long lifespan.
Heating with solid fuels can cause large temperature fluctuations from the heat source to the grill plate. The very large thickness - 12 mm - of the byJEMA grill plate and grate ensures an even distribution and securing of the temperature in the plate. Once the plate is hot, you are guaranteed many hours of stable heating for your cooking.
Dirt and small flakes of corrosion can be scraped off the plate with a spatula. If necessary, the heavy-duty plate can easily be sanded to a brand new clean surface.
- Drip tray - minimizes oil spills on surfaces.
- Lid - covers the grill plate and reduces the need for continuous oiling.
- Stainless steel palette knife - scrapes food debris and oil into the fire.
- Stainless steel oil jug.
- Suede grill gloves.
- Infrared thermometer
- Leather apron.
Note: The grill is food approved.
The grill must be set up completely level. The version with a bottom plate comes with adjustable feet. Also be aware of the risk of oil spillage on the surface. Oil spillage can be minimized by purchasing a drip tray.
- The height of the BBQ plate is 81.5 cm / with wheels 91.5 cm
- Height of the BBQ grill grate is 11.2 cm. There is a 10 cm opening for fuel.
- When placed on grass or gravel, the version without a base plate can be used. For tiles and other solid surfaces, we recommend a base plate with adjustable feet or wheels.
- Total BBQing area 0.64 m2. Opening in the middle is 35 x 35 cm.
- The BBQ plate and grate require regular oiling approx. every 2 weeks - otherwise completely maintenance free. Can remain outside all year round.
- In time, a thin layer of oil will build up on the BBQ plate and grate. This creates a non-stick surface that also helps retain the aroma of meat and spices.
- The BBQ plate reaches different temperature zones. The hottest is towards the middle. Heated with good quality solid fuel. Ready in 30-60 min.
- Total weight 115-130 kg.
- Designprotected.
The steel comes with a small oil film and is therefore not rusted on delivery. We therefore recommend washing with lukewarm soapy water after installation to remove the oil film. Within a few weeks, depending on precipitation, the rusting process will begin. If you are impatient, the process can be accelerated by a wash followed by a salt water spray.
The final patination takes several years for the rust layer to develop and form a protective film on the surface. The color will go from completely orange to slightly darker over time.
A beautiful development.
When installing on tiles or wood, the surface must be protected from rust marks for the first few years, as the rust will drip onto the surface in rainy weather. This will subside after a few months, but we always recommend paying attention.
Corten steel lasts up to 8 times longer than regular steel. The climate in which corten steel is used plays a significant role in its durability. In optimal conditions, corten steel in gardens will last over 50 years, while salty air will negatively affect the lifespan.
